Netflix is set to shine the spotlight on one of America’s most iconic jam bands with the upcoming release of a new documentary centered on Dead & Company. The streaming giant has confirmed that the film will delve into the music, culture, and enduring legacy of the band, which has carried the torch of the Grateful Dead into the 21st century.
Formed in 2015, Dead & Company features original Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann (though Kreutzmann left the touring lineup in 2023), along with singer-guitarist John Mayer, bassist Oteil Burbridge, and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti. The band quickly gained a massive following for its fusion of psychedelic rock, blues, and improvisational jam sessions—elements that defined the original Grateful Dead’s legacy.
The documentary promises an intimate look behind the scenes of Dead & Company’s final tour, which concluded in July 2023 at Oracle Park in San Francisco. Viewers can expect exclusive footage from their live performances, candid interviews with band members, and stories from fans whose lives were shaped by the music and culture of the Grateful Dead.
According to Netflix, the project is directed by filmmaker Justin Kreutzmann—son of original Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann—whose unique access offers a deeply personal lens on the band’s journey. The documentary will also explore how Dead & Company honored the Grateful Dead’s musical legacy while forging their own identity for a new generation of fans.
While no official release date has been announced, Netflix confirmed that the documentary is in post-production and is expected to debut later this year.
This release continues Netflix’s trend of producing high-profile music documentaries, following recent successes with titles featuring the likes of Taylor Swift, Kanye West, and Metallica. With Dead & Company, the platform is turning its attention to a band whose roots reach deep into American musical history and whose cultural influence continues to resonate.
Fans of the Grateful Dead, jam band enthusiasts, and music lovers alike can look forward to what promises to be a nostalgic and revealing tribute to a band that redefined live music.
