Netflix has officially announced the upcoming release of a new documentary chronicling the legacy of gothic metal pioneers Type O Negative. The film is scheduled to premiere in November 2025 and is already generating significant buzz among fans of heavy music and documentary film alike.
The documentary, produced in collaboration with longtime associates of the band, will delve deep into the history, music, and mystique of Type O Negative—a band often credited with redefining the gothic metal genre through their dark lyrical themes, unique soundscapes, and haunting aesthetic. Formed in Brooklyn in 1989, the band rose to international prominence with albums like Bloody Kisses and October Rust, becoming cult icons thanks to their deep melancholic style and the charismatic presence of late frontman Peter Steele.
Netflix promises an “unflinching and emotional journey” through the band’s evolution, exploring not only their artistic output but also the personal struggles, controversies, and enduring legacy left behind. The documentary will feature never-before-seen footage, rare interviews, behind-the-scenes material, and commentary from surviving band members, industry figures, and close friends of the group.
