Jets release wide receiver Davante Adams after no trade materializes

The New York Jets have released veteran wide receiver Davante Adams after attempts to trade him proved unsuccessful. This decision comes shortly after the team’s release of quarterback Aaron Rodgers, marking a significant shift in the Jets’ roster strategy.

Acquired from the Las Vegas Raiders in October 2024 for a third-round draft pick, Adams made an immediate impact with the Jets. Over 11 games, he recorded 67 receptions for 854 yards and seven touchdowns. Despite his contributions, the team struggled, finishing the season with a 5-12 record.

Financial considerations played a pivotal role in Adams’ release. He was set to count $38.3 million against the salary cap in 2025, the highest for any wide receiver in the league. By releasing him, the Jets free up $29.9 million in cap space, though they incur an $8.4 million dead cap charge.

At 32, Adams remains a productive receiver, having surpassed 1,000 receiving yards for five consecutive seasons. His career totals include 957 receptions, 11,844 yards, and 103 touchdowns, ranking him 10th in league history for receiving touchdowns.

With Adams now a free agent, several teams may express interest in his services. Potential landing spots include the Green Bay Packers, where Adams previously played and holds franchise records, and the Los Angeles Chargers, who could benefit from his experience to bolster their receiving corps.

The Jets’ decision to release Adams signifies a broader overhaul of their roster. The team has also given permission to wide receiver Allen Lazard to seek a trade, further indicating a shift towards rebuilding and reallocating resources for future success.
