Indianapolis Colts General Manager Chris Ballard has announced that the team’s starting quarterback position will be determined through an open competition for the 2025 season. This decision means that Anthony Richardson, the Colts’ 2023 first-round pick, will need to compete for the QB1 role.
Ballard’s Perspective on Competition
Speaking at the NFL Scouting Combine, Ballard emphasized the importance of fostering competition within the team. He stated, “It’s gotta be the right guy to create real competition. But we want to create real competition. I think it’s good for the team. I think it’s good for Anthony.”
Richardson’s Performance and Development
Richardson’s tenure with the Colts has been marked by both promise and inconsistency. In the 2024 season, he completed 47.7% of his passes, throwing for 1,814 yards with eight touchdowns and 12 interceptions over 11 games. His performance led to a midseason benching in favor of veteran quarterback Joe Flacco.
Ballard acknowledged these challenges, expressing a desire to see growth in Richardson’s game. He noted that introducing competition is intended to benefit both the team and Richardson’s development.
Plans for Acquiring Additional Quarterbacks
To facilitate this competitive environment, the Colts plan to acquire another quarterback during the offseason. Ballard indicated that the team is exploring various avenues, including free agency, trades, and the draft, to find a suitable candidate. He remarked, “It’s gotta be the right guy to create real competition.”
Looking Ahead
As the Colts prepare for the 2025 season, the quarterback competition is expected to be a focal point during training camp and preseason. This approach underscores the organization’s commitment to enhancing team performance and ensuring that the starting quarterback position is earned through merit.
