Prior to the game, Backstrom and Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin posed together with their commemorative bobbleheads, which were distributed to fans in attendance. Backstrom, who has spent all 17 of his NHL seasons with the Capitals, took a leave of absence in October 2023 to rehabilitate from hip resurfacing surgery. His presence at the ceremony not only honored the team’s rich history but also highlighted his enduring bond with the Capitals’ community.
