Breaking news: would this be a big mistake ange postecoglou set to loan star defender

Sheffield United is reportedly considering a move for Tottenham Hotspur’s defender Ashley Phillips following his standout performances while on loan at Plymouth Argyle in the Championship.

The 18-year-old, who stands at 6ft 4in, joined Spurs from Blackburn last August before heading to Plymouth in January. Phillips, who has represented England at U19 level and Wales at U16 level, has caught the eye of United amidst their plans for a major summer overhaul. Despite making 18 appearances for Plymouth in the latter half of the season, United might face competition for his signature.

Known for his composed style of play and pace despite his height, Phillips is highly regarded by Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou and has featured in their matchday squad on seven occasions earlier this season.

Phillips was poised to make his debut for Spurs earlier this season against Wolves but ended up being named on the bench, eventually opting for a loan move in January to gain more first-team experience.

A temporary move to a higher-ranked Championship side could be the next logical step for Phillips, especially with United likely to return to the Championship next season, trailing effectively 11 points behind fourth-bottom Nottingham Forest with only six Premier League games remaining.

Spurs secured Phillips for around £2 million after activating a buy-out clause in his contract, following initial negotiations falling through earlier in the summer when Blackburn Rovers increased their asking price to nearly £10 million.

His time at Home Park has left a significant impression, as noted by Plymouth Live reporter Chris Errington who remarked to Football London that “it’s difficult to believe he’s just 18. Physically, he doesn’t look out of place in Championship football, and he also possesses good technical abilities.”
