Browns trading for QB Kenny Pickett; Eagles to receive Dorian Thompson-Robinson, 2025 fifth-rounder in deal

The Cleveland Browns have acquired quarterback Kenny Pickett from the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson and a 2025 fifth-round draft pick. This trade marks Pickett’s return to the AFC North, where he began his NFL career.

Kenny Pickett’s NFL Journey

Selected 20th overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2022 NFL Draft, Pickett started 24 games over two seasons with the Steelers, achieving a 14-10 record. He amassed 4,474 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions during his tenure in Pittsburgh. In the 2024 season, Pickett served as the backup to Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia, appearing in five games with one start. He completed 60% of his passes, totaling 291 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.

Browns’ Quarterback Situation

The Browns’ quarterback room has faced uncertainty due to Deshaun Watson’s recovery from an Achilles injury and backup Jameis Winston entering free agency. Pickett’s arrival offers Cleveland a potential starting quarterback option for the 2025 season. The team holds the No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming draft, which could influence their quarterback strategy.

Eagles’ Perspective

For Philadelphia, this trade provides additional draft capital and a developmental quarterback in Thompson-Robinson. The move clears $2.6 million in cap space and positions Tanner McKee as the likely backup to Jalen Hurts.

Looking Ahead

Pickett’s transition to Cleveland presents an opportunity to compete for a starting role and revitalize his career. The Browns aim to stabilize their quarterback position, while the Eagles focus on financial flexibility and depth chart adjustments.
