Ohtani opens 2025 with a bang, homers in 1st spring at-bat

Shohei Ohtani made a sensational start to the 2025 spring training by hitting a home run in his first at-bat for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Facing his former team, the Los Angeles Angels, Ohtani led off the game and worked a full count against pitcher Yusei Kikuchi before driving a fastball over the left-field wall.

This impressive performance comes after Ohtani underwent shoulder surgery in the offseason to repair a torn labrum in his left (non-throwing) shoulder, an injury sustained during the World Series in October. Despite the surgery, Ohtani is expected to serve as the designated hitter for the Dodgers’ season opener on March 18 against the Chicago Cubs in Tokyo, with plans to resume pitching by May.

In the 2024 season, Ohtani did not pitch due to Tommy John surgery but made significant contributions as a hitter. He led the National League with 54 home runs, 130 RBIs, and 59 stolen bases, becoming the first player to achieve a 50-homer, 50-steal season and earning his third MVP award.

The Dodgers secured a 6-5 victory over the Angels in this spring training game, with Ohtani’s home run setting the tone for the matchup.

Ohtani’s remarkable return not only highlights his resilience but also sets high expectations for the upcoming season as he continues to excel both at the plate and, potentially, on the mound.
