Sep Vanmarcke Compares Classics Superstars: “Mathieu van der Poel and Tadej Pogačar Are Naturally Much Calmer, While Wout van Aert Experiences More Stress”
In the high-stakes world of cycling’s Spring Classics, mental composure can be just as decisive as physical strength. Former Belgian pro Sep Vanmarcke, who spent years battling the best on cobbled roads, recently shared his perspective on three of the biggest stars in the modern peloton—Mathieu van der Poel, Tadej Pogačar, and Wout van Aert.
Speaking about their personalities under pressure, Vanmarcke pointed out a key difference:
“Mathieu and Tadej are naturally much calmer. They seem to handle big races with ease, without letting the tension get to them. Wout, on the other hand, experiences more stress—it’s visible in his approach.”
Pogačar’s Fearless Mentality
Tadej Pogačar, the two-time Tour de France winner and reigning champion of both the Tour of Flanders and Il Lombardia, has built a reputation for his attacking style and unshakable confidence. Despite being relatively new to the cobbled Classics, he approached the races last season with his trademark fearlessness.
The Slovenian’s instinctive, aggressive racing often makes him seem immune to pressure. He’s not one to overthink tactics—he rides on feeling, pushing when he senses an opportunity, and that natural instinct allows him to remain relaxed even in the toughest battles.
“I just enjoy racing. Whether it’s the Tour de France or Flanders, I try to have fun. That’s how I stay calm,” Pogačar has said in the past.
Van der Poel: Ice-Cold Execution
Mathieu van der Poel, much like Pogačar, possesses an innate ability to perform under pressure. The Dutchman, who stormed to victory at Milan-San Remo, Paris-Roubaix, and the World Championships last year, is known for his explosive attacks and supreme bike handling.
His relaxed nature off the bike translates into an ice-cold mindset in races. Even when rivals expect him to make a move, he remains patient, striking at the perfect moment.
Vanmarcke highlighted Van der Poel’s controlled demeanor, noting that he rarely looks flustered, even in chaotic race scenarios.
Van Aert’s Internal Pressure
While Wout van Aert is undeniably one of the most versatile riders in the world, Vanmarcke suggested that he carries more internal stress than his two main rivals.
The Belgian superstar has often faced immense expectations from fans and media, particularly in the Classics. While his results are consistently impressive, he has struggled to convert them into the number of victories many believe he deserves.
Vanmarcke pointed out that this external pressure might weigh on Van Aert, making him more cautious in key moments compared to the more instinct-driven Van der Poel and Pogačar.
Mental Strength in the Classics
With the 2025 Spring Classics season approaching, the mental game will once again play a crucial role. Pogačar and Van der Poel will look to continue their dominance with their calm, instinctive approaches, while Van Aert will aim to shake off the pressure and finally claim a long-awaited Monument victory.
One thing is certain—when these three line up together, cycling fans can expect fireworks.
