Mathieu van der Poel expressed disappointment upon learning that his anticipated cyclo-cross duel with Wout van Aert would be postponed due to Van Aert’s illness. Van Aert was scheduled to make his season debut at the Zilvermeercross in Mol but had to withdraw because of sudden illness.
Van der Poel, who was preparing for the race in Zonhoven when informed of Van Aert’s withdrawal, remarked, “I think it’s unfortunate, of course. Wout is always a fun opponent, and he also brings extra people, so that’s a pity.”
Despite this setback, Van Aert has since recovered and resumed training. He completed a 131-kilometer ride on December 24 and a high-paced run on December 25, indicating his readiness to compete.
The next opportunity for the two rivals to face each other is expected at the Exact Cross in Loenhout on December 27. Both athletes are anticipated to participate, setting the stage for a highly anticipated showdown.
The rivalry between Van der Poel and Van Aert has been a highlight in the cyclo-cross world, with fans eagerly awaiting their head-to-head competitions. Their upcoming encounters are expected to draw significant attention and excitement within the cycling community.
