Croatian Ex-NHL Star Swaps Teams in KHL Blockbuster Trade

In a surprising mid-season shakeup, former NHL forward and Croatian hockey standout Borna Rendulić has been traded to Avangard Omsk in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). The move comes as part of a larger trade deal aimed at strengthening Avangard’s offensive lineup ahead of the playoffs.

Rendulić, who previously played for Severstal Cherepovets, has been a consistent performer since joining the KHL, bringing his NHL experience and scoring prowess to the ice. This season, he has tallied 12 goals and 18 assists, making him one of Severstal’s top contributors.

Avangard Omsk’s head coach praised the acquisition, citing Rendulić’s versatility, strong physical presence, and ability to perform under pressure as key reasons for the trade. “We believe Borna will add significant depth to our forward group and provide the scoring punch we need as we push for the playoffs,” the coach said.

Rendulić, 32, is no stranger to top-tier hockey, having played for the Colorado Avalanche and Vancouver Canucks during his NHL tenure. He made history as the first Croatian-born player to score a goal in the NHL, a milestone that remains a point of pride for hockey fans in his home country.

In a statement following the trade, Rendulić expressed gratitude to Severstal and excitement for his new chapter with Avangard. “I appreciate my time with Severstal and the support from the fans, but I’m looking forward to contributing to Avangard’s success,” he said.

With the playoffs on the horizon, Avangard Omsk hopes Rendulić’s veteran presence and scoring ability will be the missing piece in their quest for KHL supremacy.
