“I can’t stop being bewildered by all these people who say, ‘That guy sucks!’ I’ve got news for you – you don’t get to where you’re at if you suck! Okay?” Kirk Hammett on why bad solos are dying – and dealing with armchair guitar critics

In a recent interview, Metallica’s lead guitarist Kirk Hammett expressed his frustration with online critics and the harsh judgment that many guitarists face today, especially when it comes to solo performances. Hammett, who has been a driving force behind some of the most iconic guitar solos in metal history, addressed the negative feedback that musicians often receive, particularly from what he calls “armchair guitar critics.”

“I can’t stop being bewildered by all these people who say, ‘That guy sucks!’” Hammett said. “I’ve got news for you – you don’t get to where you’re at if you suck! Okay?” His statement reflects his bewilderment at the quick-to-judge mentality often found online, where musicians—despite their years of experience and achievements—are dismissed by critics who may lack a deep understanding of the craft.

Hammett went on to discuss why he believes poorly executed guitar solos are becoming a thing of the past. He attributes this to the increasing technical proficiency of modern guitarists, many of whom are inspired by legends like himself. According to Hammett, the level of musicianship has been steadily rising, making it less likely for subpar solos to survive in today’s highly competitive and skilled music landscape. “Bad solos are dying out because guitarists are more technically adept than ever,” he explained, adding that the demands of the industry and fans push players to constantly refine their skills.

Still, Hammett is aware that no matter how accomplished a guitarist may be, there will always be those ready to criticize from behind a screen. “Dealing with armchair guitar critics can be frustrating, but at the end of the day, they’re not the ones out there performing night after night,” Hammett remarked. His message to fellow musicians and aspiring guitarists is clear: focus on your craft, ignore the negativity, and remember that achieving success in music requires genuine talent and dedication.

For Hammett, who has spent decades perfecting his playing, these criticisms do little to shake his confidence or love for his instrument. He continues to deliver powerful solos that have defined Metallica’s sound, proving that lasting success in music is built on skill, passion, and perseverance—not the opinions of online critics.
