Dockers Grind Out Crucial Victory Over Saints

The Fremantle Dockers have bolstered their position in the AFL Women’s league, defeating St Kilda by 11 points at RSEA Park in a tightly contested match. This win propels the Dockers closer to the top eight, underscoring their resilience and fighting spirit as they navigate the season. The hard-fought victory was highlighted by a gritty defensive performance and crucial contributions from several players.

Fremantle coach Lisa Webb expressed her satisfaction with her team’s performance, particularly praising their ability to secure a win on the road. “Always nice to get one on the road, got another one in four days, we’ll certainly bag that,” Webb stated post-game. “At times it was challenging, navigating a few things that happened during the game. Once again, really happy to grind it out.” The victory was especially meaningful given the obstacles the team had to overcome, showing their adaptability and tenacity.

The Dockers’ defensive unit was the cornerstone of their success. Webb credited the backline for setting up the win, particularly singling out Emma O’Driscoll, who starred in her milestone match. “I thought our backs set it up really well, they were really strong,” Webb said. “(Emma) O’Driscoll shone in her milestone game, really well supported down there by all of our backs. I couldn’t pinpoint a couple of them; I thought they were really dominant.” This defensive cohesion ensured the Saints were kept at bay during crucial moments of the match.

Another standout performer for Fremantle was Ash Brazill, who took on the tough task of shutting down St Kilda’s Jesse Wardlaw. “She’s incredible, what she does,” Webb commented. “She said it to me a few weeks ago, you set me a task and I’ll be fiercely determined to get it done. Once again, she showed she can do it.” Brazill’s athleticism and poise were pivotal in keeping the Saints’ forward line quiet, contributing significantly to the Dockers’ defensive strength.

Up front, young forward Tunisha Kikoak made a strong impression. The 19-year-old, returning from a recent shoulder injury, was instrumental in keeping the Dockers’ attack ticking over, booting two vital goals. “She’s a young kid, she’s 19,” Webb noted. “I thought she did a really good job. She came off a shoulder a couple of weeks ago, kicked a couple of really important goals. Big steps for a young kid.” Kikoak’s efforts were well-supported by her forward line teammates, Ariana Hetherington and Ebony Antonio, showcasing the Dockers’ offensive depth.

Webb highlighted the importance of team chemistry in overcoming injuries and maintaining form. “I think it’s playing together, it’s starting to build,” she said. “Having Ash Mac (Aisling McCarthy) and Gabby (O’Sullivan) come through the midfield—it’s not easy at times, in terms of moving personnel around. We’ve had a few injuries, like every team does. We’re just trying to gel and find the right mix.” The Dockers’ ability to adapt and still perform is a testament to their strategic planning and depth of talent.

Looking ahead, Webb believes that this victory is a testament to the Dockers’ resilience and determination to push for a spot in the finals. “We’ve shown that we’re a tough side and we can grind out wins like what we did. We’d like to continue to build and we’re going to have to continue to push for wins this season but one we’re up for.” As the season progresses, maintaining consistency and fitness will be key as the Dockers aim to solidify their place in the top eight.

The Dockers’ win over St Kilda not only boosts their chances of making the finals but also sends a clear message to the rest of the league: they are a team capable of overcoming adversity and winning tough games. With momentum on their side, Fremantle will look to build on this success and continue their march towards the top of the ladder. As they gear up for their next challenge in just four days, fans can expect the Dockers to keep delivering high-intensity performances in pursuit of their ultimate goal.
